NYS Summer Softball

NYS offers a summer season for girls in Mendon and Upton that are at least 8 years of age and in their 2^nd year of Farm League.  In 2019, a U8 summer team was added also.  Girls will play two weekday games against teams from surrounding towns.  There will be at least one practice each week.  Additionally, girls on the U14A, U12A, and U10A teams will play in 3 or 4 weekend tournaments.  Girls on these teams will play 4-6 games during each tournament, and these games will be scheduled from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.

Please be aware that the summer teams require a high level of commitment from the girls and their families, especially at the "A" levels.  Players are expected to attend all games and practices.  The success of these teams depends on these commitments.  The coaches will discuss this with the girls and parents during tryouts.  The girls selected for the summer teams will be expected to honor their commitments.

 

Level	Description
U14 A & B (Birth year 2005-2006)	Extremely competitive leagues. 2 games per week, 1 practice per week and multiple weekend tournaments with extensive travel to other locations in MA, RI and CT.  Must be able to commit to at least 6-8 weeks of your summer.  Player numbers determine if there are multiple teams.  TRYOUTS are required to play and not all players may be selected.  B teams may or may not participate in tournaments.
U12 A & B (Birth year 2007-2008)	Extremely competitive leagues. 2 games per week, 1 practice per week and multiple weekend tournaments with extensive travel to other locations in MA, RI and CT.  Must be able to commit to at least 6-8 weeks of your summer.  Player numbers determine if there are multiple teams.  TRYOUTS are required to play and not all players may be selected.  B teams may or may not participate in tournaments.  Games are normally played on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6:00 PM.
U10 A & B (Birth year 2009-2011)	Extremely competitive leagues. 2 games per week, 1 practice per week and multiple weekend tournaments with extensive travel to other locations in MA, RI and CT.  Must be able to commit to at least 6-8 weeks of your summer.  Player numbers determine if there are multiple teams.  TRYOUTS are required to play and not all players may be selected.  B teams will not participate in tournaments.  Games are normally played on Monday and Wednesday nights at 6:00 PM.  Please note that girls with a 2011 birth year can play U10 or U8.  (A tryout is required for the U10 level.)
U8 (Birth year 2011-2013)	Less competitive games against nearby towns.  1 game per week and 1 practice per week for 6-8 weeks during June and July.  Tryouts are not required at the U8 level.  Please note that girls with a 2011 birth year can play U10 or U8.  (A tryout is required for the U10 level.)

 

Tryouts for the NYS 2020 Summer U12 & U10 Teams

NYS will be holding a tryout for the 2020 Summer U12 & U10 teams on Sunday, October 13 at Memorial Field in Mendon.  Girls born in the years 2007 & 2008 will need to attend the U12 tryout at 9:00 AM.  Girls born in the years 2009, 2010, and 2011 will need to attend the U10 tryout at 11:00 AM.  We expect each session to last two hours.

Any girl interested in playing summer softball at the U12, U10A, and U10B levels should sign up for and attend the tryout!  Please note that girls born during or after 2011 will play on the Summer U8 team.  (Girls born in 2011 can play at the U10 or U8 level.)  There is no need to attend the tryout for the U8 team.

Holding tryouts in the fall helps the Board to determine interest in the summer program as early as possible.  This gives us time to recruit and fill the maximum number of summer teams.  Last year, we conducted weekly indoor practices during the winter for the girls interested in playing summer softball.  We expect to continue that this year.  Signing up for the tryouts, even with a “No” for the RSVP, will show us that you want to be included in the notifications for these winter practices.  (Please note – these are not the same as the Pitchers and Catchers Clinics and Winter Clinics – more info on those will be coming towards the end of the year!)

Twin Valley Softball League (Summer Softball League)

The Twin Valley Softball League (TVSL) is the summer league that NYS teams at the Majors (U14), Minors (U12), and AAA (U10) play in.  TVSL maintains their website, which includes schedules, results, and standings at the following link: http://www.eteamz.com/twinvalley/.

 

For the 2019 Summer Season, the TVSL key dates are as follows:

Summer Softball 2019 - Change to Tryouts (Updated 8/6/18)

Dear NYS Families,

Another successful Summer softball season is coming to a close. The NYS board is always looking for ways to improve our program, whether it be increasing participation, building better fundamentals with the girls, or fielding more competitive teams. To that end, we have decided to make a change to the Summer tryout and selection process. Rather than wait until next Spring to hold tryouts and select teams, we are going to hold tryouts for Summer 2019 immediately after the 2018 Summer season ends.

There are several reasons behind this decision:

• Choosing the core of the teams early will allow for more time to work with the girls and build basic fundamentals which are crucial for success
• Determining interest in the program as early as possible will allow the board time to recruit and fill the maximum number of summer teams
• Allowing more time to foster a team atmosphere outside of games

This is not a move to make softball a year-round sport. The “offseason” commitments will be light and non-mandatory. The exact details will vary from team to team and be communicated when the teams are selected.

Initial Tryout Dates:

Sunday Sept 16 – 9am to 12pm

Thursday Sept 20 – 6pm-8pm

 

Girls must attend one of these tryouts to be eligible to be selected for a Summer Ball team.

If you are at all interested in Summer 2019 softball please signup for tryouts OR let us know if you are unable to attend. If necessary, there will be another tryout in Oct to capture any that missed September.

The core of the Summer 2019 teams will be selected from these tryouts but we will leave spots open for a final tryout at the end of Winter Clinics.

The location for both tryout sessions is at Memorial Field in Mendon.

Any girl that wants to play summer softball in 2019 at the U14 (birth years 2004 & 2005), U12 (birth years 2006 & 2007), and U10A (birth years 2008 & 2009) levels should attend one of the tryout sessions.

Girls born in 2010 will be eligible for the U10B team and will not need to attend these tryout sessions.  More information will be made available for the U10B team at Winter Clinics (February or March).
